The Whitecaps will have a new conference rival in 2018: Los Angeles Football Club, who will play out of a new 22,000 stadium in South Los Angeles, by the L.A. Memorial Coliseum.

On Thursday, LAFC unveiled their crest and also announced comedian Will Ferrell as a part owner. Add him to the long list. There’s 26 of them, including Magic Johnson, Mia Hamm and Nomar Garciaparra. (Sports Illustrated has the low down on ownership group).

After the obligatory Kicking and Screaming reference (and you’re better off picking a sports flick from this Province staff list) Hamm introduced Ferrell who said, “This is not a joke.”

A damn good marketing move though. Take that, Seattle and Drew Carey.

LAFC

LAFC’s crest will of course get mixed reviews because all crests get mixed reviews.

I say they nailed it. Also, I asked my designer guru friend, Sol, and he said: “Love. Classy as f*!^. Where’s my hat?”

So, it’s settled. Great logo.

And if you’re into design, or logo geekdom, here’s a cool little behind the scenes look at the process Matthew Wolff went through. The badge “embodies the success, urban texture, and glamour of Los Angeles.” The workmark is “an elegant and versatile Art Deco-inspired typeface based on the signage of architect Richard Neutra.”

Totally.

There is a Vancouver connection to LAFC. Former Caps midfielder John Thorrington was recently named VP of soccer operations.

As for signings, well, LAFC are apparently “obsessed” with Cristiano Ronaldo (who isn’t?) and want to pair him with Wayne Rooney (The Mirror). Too bad Ronaldo is already rumour-committed to David Beckham’s Miami.
